Time was all I needed as I took the stairs two at a time. I dashed down the hallway and came to a complete stop at the hall supply closet. I annoyingly opened the door and found jimmy curled up in a small ball on the ground.
“Jimmy! Get out of the closet.” I grabbed his little arm and pulled him softly but forcefully out of the closet. He had his blanket wrapped around him and was sucking furiously on his thumb.
“But…but….Sara says I hads to stay in here or...or the monser will get me!” he protested.
How could I explain to my 4 year old there was no such thing as monsters? I picked him up swiftly and ran back down the stairs.
“Tom where is your tie?!” my wife Laura called franticly over to me.
I ran to the bedroom and, still with jimmy in my arms and grabbed my tie off of the dresser. I swung it around my neck and tied it so fast it looked like it was tied up by a bunch of 2 year olds.
“Sara?! Charlie?! Laura?! You ready to leave?” I yelled at them while checking my watch. I ran out the door without waiting for an answer with jimmy still in my arms.
As I stepped outside I was suddenly overwhelmed with the bitter cold. The soft breeze was a cool reminder of how grateful am for my home. I exhaled slowly for a second then stepped out into the freshly fallen snow. The soft snow reminded me of perfect bundles of cotton. I reached out my hand and watched as a small cluster of snow formed right in the palm of my hand, but shortly melted away and another one would try to form again. I licked the freshly fallen snow carefully off of my hand and soon became aware of my shivering child in hands. I silently walked over to the minivan and opened the door. I carefully placed jimmy in his car seat and buckled him in.
“There you go bud.”
He smiled his adorable smile then went back to sucking his thumb. I turned around to see my family rushing to the car for warmth. Each dressed in their finest cloths to show respect to their father above.
